A friend, who often traveled to West Africa, gifted me a beautiful piece of indigo fabric that had been dyed by a group of women in a village in Nigeria. The practice of using indigo dye to create tie-dyed and batik fabric is a centuries-old tradition in several places in West Africa. Men are as engaged in this practice as women. The dye is fermented in vats or pits in the ground and the fabric is dyed in the pits. After the fabric is dyed it is laid out on the ground or over pots and baskets to dry. This painting was inspired by that practice.
